Hong Kong (China), 14 January 2012 – Anything can be accomplished with diversity. By working together and learning from each other, we can achieve much more, especially if we’re from different ethnic backgrounds. Our life experiences are also enriched, and we get to expand our knowledge of the world around us. No doubt, living in pluralistic societies brings about awareness, support and understanding.

Learning together.

To promote diversity and carry on being MAD through “We Care” corporate initiatives, Hong Kong staff decided to put this concept into practice by taking the time to learn about the culture of ethnic minorities. As part of the monthly CSR activities, a workshop was held at the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui (HKSKH) Lady MacLehose Centre in Kwai Chung to understand the cultural characteristics of ethnic groups in Hong Kong.

Understanding culture.

The workshop was conducted by helpers in both English and Chinese. Employees were taken on a community walk of the district, home to many ethnic minorities. Staff visited a mosque where they had a chat with a religious leader, and stopped at a restaurant for a snack and a chat with the owner.

There were also sessions for group photos and gift-giving. Group Chief Financial Officer Cathy Zhou, and Chief Technology Officer Malcolm Chiu, handed out presents of food and toys to the families of ethnic minorities on behalf of QI staff.

One people, one voice.

Employees delved into the wonderful world of traditional ethnic art with some retail therapy at Love Multi Culture (LMC), a shop run by South Asians at the Social Enterprise of Ethnic Minority. The enterprise aims to instil independence in South Asians by encouraging them to participate in self-reliant activities. Co-operative members themselves are responsible for managing and running the social enterprise.

The Lady MacLehose Centre has been providing diverse social services to minorities living in Hong Kong since 2000. These services include promoting harmony among the different ethnic groups, establishing community resources, and helping to build a society of equality. Last year a service team was put together comprising 15 social workers and assistants from Hong Kong, Pakistan, Nepal and India, plus the partner groups and social workers who have been supporting the centre for years.
